Hey Leroy!
:)

I thought it might be fitting to address this issue in a separate discussion. As you have seen from past discussions, I hold a peculiar view of free-will (the compatibilist view) that is radically different from the one I was taught in church (the libertarian view). I would very much appreciate it if you would like to share your views on the subject with me (as well as anyone else who is interested in joining the discussion).

My three questions are,

1) What is "free-will," properly defined.

2) What power does it have (what can it "do" of its own power)?

3) What Biblical support do you have for your views?

By the way, in case anyone wants to know ahead of time, my personal views are the same as those of Martin Luther, which he expressed in his book, "De Servo Arbitrium" ("The Bondage of the Will")--a book which I highly recommend to everyone interested in the subject.

you're gonna make me read?!?!?! *gasp* *choke* Looks like I'm gonna have to get the book before I start commenting. It may take a while for me to get back to this site, but I'm gonna do my best! Thank you sir!

:)
Very cool,
Why is it going to be difficult for you to get back on the site? Are you going on vacation?

Well, I want to buy the book, first. Then I want to read it... and re-read it if needed to understand what he's saying. I am not going on vacation but I am in trying to wrap up a couple books I've already started. One is "Why Pray" by Phillip Yancey. Although I had heard of him, I had never read any of his works until my wife got me the book. I absolutely love it! Ok... enough free advertising. Plus I have my Ames Bible College studying to do inbetween work and family and everything else. So, it may take a moment to get to the Martin Luther book, but I know that when I do, I'll enjoy it... having been a former tongue-talking lutheran :-)

In Christ,

Leroy

you and i have discussed this before i think.if i remmember correctly our views lined up together.a man is only free to act according to his nature.the bible teaches that a mans nature is sin.therefore a man is in bondage to sin evidenced by the bible telling us that there is no one that seeks god not one.i believe david also states that he was sinfull from birth.therefore no one after adam has free will they are free agents able to act with freedom in as far as they are limited by there nature.man does not and will not choose god of his own volition that is why jesus said no one can come to the son unless the father draw them.there were only two men born with free will one was jesus and the other adam.bible says after adams sin all were born slaves to sin.slaves dont have free will they are limited by what there master says and in mans case there master from birth is sin.but praise and thanks be to god who by christ jesus our lord has restored free will to us by the new birth through the power of the holy spirit.whereby wich i can now say along with the apostle paul i am no longer a slave to sin so why should i live in it any longer.thats free will if i ever seen it

Yes, I was a tongue talking lutheran. Before that, I was raised baptist... then I attended a non-denom pentecostal church, then assembly of God... I have no church affilliation now, but deep down inside... I'm a mutt!!!
